F1 went into the season in League 3 after 2 successive promotions and it was felt mid-table would be respectable enough come the end of the season. As it turned out a narrow 4th place finish and 3 quarter final appearances in the cups proved a major disappointment. Key moments in the season were:
Skelton (h) September 11 - Lost 2-1 despite dominating the game and missing a penalty. The 6 point 'swing' in this game proved crucial come the end of the season.
Bay Horse (a) October 2 - Won 3-2, this was a big test after 2 straight league defeats and we went into this game without The General. Proved we could cope without him and stand upto the aggressive gamesmanship tactics employed by Bay Horse and even afforded the luxury of another missed penalty.
Copmanthorpe (h) November 23 - Lost 4-3 in the last minute having had to play with defender Chris Cox in nets all game. Another critical defeat to promotion rivals.
Wilberfoss (a) November 30 Cup Quarter Final - lost 1-0 in one of the most ridiculously refereed games of the season. Again Coxy had to play in nets and whilst the referee was busy enjoying chats and arranging his evening pint with the villagers on the sidelines he missed numerous important decisions.A scandalous defeat which would be later avenged twice in the season when officiated by an independant whistler.
Acomb Celtic (a) January 8 drew 3-3 against the side who would become champions. The masters of self promotion have an impressive home record over the last 2 seasons but after winning there 3-2 in 04/05 f1 had to be content with a draw despite coming back from 3-1 down and laying siege to the Acomb goal in the 2nd half. This match proved we weren't that far behind the Champions despite them never considering us as promotion contenders.
Acomb Celtic (h) January 22 lost 2-0 after a surreal opening 5 or 6 minutes which saw F1 forced to kick off the game by the opposition despite only having 7 men on the field. It is true that for some reason we were operating on a different timescale and had the rest of the team en route to the pitch but you would have thought sportsmanship would have prevailed and the opposition would wait for us to have a full quota whilst we would pay whatever fine we would incur for a 5 minute late kick off. As it was Ben Calverley had to start the game in goal with his bare hands and a drill top on yet for those 5 minutes the 7 men held firm. Suffice to say F1 had no co-ordination and were totally out of sorts and Acomb thoroughly deserved their win although the circumstances surround the pressure put on the ref to start the game left a sour taste in the mouth.
Wanderers (a) February 19 Cup Quarter Final lost 2-6, yet again we shot ourselves in the foot after conceding in the opening 30 seconds and being 3-0 down after 10 minutes. An inspired performance by the Wanderers goalkeeper in the 2nd half stopped the comeback from getting closer than 2-4 before inevitably the 2-4-4 formation was hit on the break to give the scoreline a lopsided look.
Skelton (a) March 12 won 3-2 with a gritty perfomance inspired by The General in possibly his best game for the club. This win gave us hope in the run-in and effectively handed Acomb Celtic promotion.
Real Way Station (h) March 19 lost 0-2, after the performance the week before against Skelton this was our best opportunity at finally winning some silverware against a team from the league below. It was a bad day at the office for the strikers however as Station made a mockery of their league position with good organisation and tactics to record a smash and grab win.
Copmanthorpe (a) April 27 lost 3-7 in a very weird match that could and should have finished about 10-10. Chris Cox was forced into action in goal again and did his best but again F1's finishing let them down and this result killed off our promotion hopes.
Darren Bent is one of the Barclays Premier League’s most prolific strikers. Now he’s passing on his top tips to help amateur strikers everywhere score more this month.
