The Story So Far...1993 - present
28 Mar 2011

F1 Racing have been competing in the York Minster Engineering League 3 on Saturdays from 2009 after previously playing on Sunday Mornings since 1993 under the guises of Regional Railways North East, Railtrack and Northern Spirit.

The club was founded as Regional Railways North East by the legendary Don Bishop in 1993 mainly for railwaymen but it became more mainstream over time. That side had such hall of famers and cult heroes as Steve Foots, Dougie Desmond, Pete Goldsmith and current F1 manager Ian Yeowart.

In 1998 RRNE became Northern Spirit as the company changed names. Many of the RRNE players had retired or moved on including Don Bishop so a whole new set of players were introduced over time, but Spirit were never to hit the heights of the previous regime and suffered the clubs only ever relegation in 2002.

From the ashes of Northern Spirit rose F1 Racing with Neil Yeowart and Dave Wright overseeing a chaotic first season where they started the team totally from scratch and which saw 29 players used. A mid table finish in 2003 laid the foundations for Andrew Bridge to take the reins in 2003.

Season 2003/04 started patchily much like the previous season until a link to new players who were studying at York St Johns opened up through them working for the-then club sponsors part time. This saw many new players join who would go on to form an integral part of the team over the next 3 years and saw F1 claim 2 successive promotions amongst numerous giant-killing exploits in the cup competitions.

After applying to join the  Saturday Afternoon League and subsequently having the application granted, F1 moved to Shipton by Beningbrough and spent the summer of 2009 restoring and renovating the playing facilities there in preparation for our debut season where we did enough to stay in Division 3 and avoid the cut which saw the League expand to four divisions.

2010/11 saw the introduction of a Reserve Team ('F2') who now take part in the 'D' division of the Reserve League. The 1st team had a very competitive campaign which led to them being in the promotion hunt right up until April before an epic cup run, which ran over 5 games in 2 weeks, saw them oust teams from Dvisions 4,3 and 2 en-route to a thrilling semi-final and final which both featured penalties and injury time goals.

Season 2011/12 will see the introduction  of a 3rd team ("F3") , run by Simon Nunns, who will be playing their matches back in the York Sunday Morning League.
